This Week in F-Droid

TWIF curated on Thursday, 26 Jun 2025, Week 26

F-Droid core

It comes a moment in the dev life when one needs to take the risk and deem an app stable enough for everyone. That time came this week for 1.23.0, and by now everyone either got their F-Droid Basic auto-updated or saw the Updates tab red dot for F-Droid. Let the ACRA reports flow! Or… just enjoy the Material Design update!

Over the years our categories were rather static, not saying we’ve reached perfection but, every time you add or remove one you need to parse the whole repo and reconsider past choices. Based on our main client developer @grote’s initial research, @linsui took the time to go through heaps of apps to create some new categories and label apps a bit better. Today you can see the new DNS & Hosts, Email and VPN & Proxy, but more are underway as we peruse the candidates. This won’t cover all apps. As usual, if you see any mis-categorization, or want to add more categories feel free to ping us or make your contribution directly.

Community News

To continue in the same software development vein, Ashish Bhatia pulls the curtain a bit so you can see what it is like to be an Android developer today. “Maintaining an Android app is a lot of work” is a ten minutes journey through programming languages, breaking changes, UI rules unpredictability and forced upgrades. For TWIF readers these might sound familiar.

Now that you got scared by that experience, let’s continue with “17 Tools We Use Daily for Free”. Are these the Best Open Source Apps for Android (2025)? I hope not, this is just week 26, smack in the middle of the year, surely some great apps are just around the corner waiting to be included in F-Droid!?

Bangle.js Gadgetbridge and Gadgetbridge were updated to 0.86.0 but users of Fossil/Skagen Hybrids should skip this version as the app will crash on connect. An update builds as we write this.

Element - Secure Messenger was updated to 1.6.42 fixing a CVE level issue. You are encouraged to update, or better yet switch to the newer Element X - Secure Chat & Call as the old version will soon be depreciated.

Zulip was updated to 30.0.258 aka the “new app” rewritten in Flutter and this developer post explains what’s changed. NOTE: Description and details will be fixed with the next update.

Newly Added Apps

6 apps were newly added

Downgraded Apps

  • Booming Music was downgraded from 1.1.0-beta.3 to 1.0.4, as upstream asked us to skip “beta” updates.
