Happiness is an update

This Week in F-Droid

Looks like not all Nextcloud mobile users are as happy as they can be, and here at F-Droid, we attend to their happiness by building Nextcloud, Nextcloud Dev, updated to 20250505 today, and a plethora of related apps. But not everyone gets Nextcloud from F-Droid (for now) and they might be frustrated with the app downloaded from third-party centralized stores. The developers have penned a blog post explaining why the app has limited functionality when installed from there and how they hope future regulation can deal with these kind of issues.

Cheogram was updated to 2.17.10-1+free, bringing a fresh initial implementation of Spaces. What are Spaces? Who knows? They have a lot of names, each app/protocol has their own buzzword for this thing: Groups? Communities? Guilds? Clusters? Hubs? Meta-rooms? Pubs? Clubs? Workspaces? Nodes? Sets? Circles? “A space may contain several rooms, and a room may be contained in several spaces. Spaces can be server spaces used to centralize membership/permissions and make it easier to discover related rooms, they may be client spaces defined by end-users for cross-client grouping of channels in the user interface.” says the intro to the big “XMPP Spaces” pad brainstormed back in Nov 2021. What’s next? More polish and more clients to adopt and standardize it.

Delta Chat was updated to 1.58.3 and its fork ArcaneChat to 1.58.2. A new fork-of-the-fork has been included, WhatsDown, ⚡ Fast encrypted chats for the family 🎉, that hopes to improve upon ArcaneChat with new colors, backgrounds, so far, and whatever the future holds.

Element X - Secure Chat & Call was updated to 25.05.0. If you see calls misbehaving, a fixed version is already deployed and will be built next.

And in more Matrix client news, FluffyChat was updated to 1.26.1 after 3 months of pause. The changelog is fluffy and full of new stuff, so make sure you peruse it.

Kahon, A fork of Mihon with some annoying restrictions removed, was just added. It’s a fork-of-a-fork of Tachiyomi, which we archived one year ago.

Inure App Manager (Trial) was updated to build104.1.0 and switched to reproducible builds signed with the upstream developers key. If you had version 103 or older installed, please uninstall it and install the latest version.

The old Password Store/Password Store (legacy) app was archived about two years ago and again last year as development stopped (we only have old versions from 4 years ago though since there is no new release since then). This week we included Password Store, Manage your passwords, a fork that continues the development and keeps with the pace of Android modernization.

We covered the NGI uncertain future back in July 2024 and this month, Replicant - makers of a free software mobile operating system putting the emphasis on freedom and privacy/security - tell their story about the NGI funding they received and why they signed the letter of support for NGI.

NewPipe was updated to 0.27.7 to fix a YouTube bug where it provided only a 360p stream. The solution employed in this version is likely temporary, and in the long run the SABR video protocol needs to be implemented, but the TeamNewPipe members are currently busy so any help would be greatly appreciated!
